Background music systems for business
Everything a venue operator needs to know: how commercial background music works, what the law requires, what it costs, and how to choose a system that will still be playing, reliably and legally, in five years' time.
What is a background music system?
A background music system is the combination of licensed music, professional curation, scheduling software and playback hardware that gives a commercial space its soundtrack. It differs from consumer streaming in three fundamental ways: the music is legally cleared for public performance, the programming is designed for a business day rather than a personal queue, and the engineering assumes the real world: staff who shouldn't need to touch it, and internet connections that sometimes vanish.
Rosi Systems builds and runs exactly that. Our music programmers, drawn from leading UK radio stations, hand-curate your station's flow, balancing styles, artists, eras, tempo and energy. Where a shuffle plays songs at random, curation gives your day a shape.
Licensed music or royalty-free?
Standard copyrighted music, the songs your customers know, requires a public performance licence. In the UK that's TheMusicLicence, combining PRS for Music (songwriters) and PPL (artists and labels). This applies even if you just have a radio on in the corner, and consumer devices like an iPod or a Sonos with a personal subscription are not licensed for commercial use.
Royalty-free music sits outside the copyright agencies, so no performance licence is needed. Modern royalty-free catalogues are genuinely good in chill-out, deep house, ambient and classical styles and a strong fit for spas, waiting rooms and clinics, though mainstream pop isn't available this way. Many venues run a mix of both, and we'll advise honestly on which suits your space and budget.
How the music reaches your venue
Local playback, our recommended approach, runs the player software on a machine in your venue. It downloads content overnight, supports up to 32 audio zones per machine and needs the internet only for updates, never for playback. Streamed playback via a set-top box is available where simplicity trumps everything, with the trade-off that it depends on your connection.
