Frequently asked questions

Licensing, hardware, internet outages and Christmas songs: everything venue operators actually ask us, answered without the sales gloss.

Licensing & legality

Do I really need a music licence for my business?

If music is audible to customers or staff on commercial premises, UK law treats it as a public performance, so you need TheMusicLicence from PPL PRS. That includes "just having the radio on in the corner." The exceptions are genuinely royalty-free catalogues, which we also supply.

Can I use Spotify, Apple Music or Amazon Music in my venue?

No. Consumer streaming services prohibit commercial use in their terms and carry none of the public-performance rights a venue needs, whatever device or speakers they play through. This is one of the most common (and most expensive) compliance mistakes we see.

What is royalty-free music, honestly?

Music whose rights holders sit outside the collection agencies, so no PPL/PRS tariff applies. Modern royalty-free catalogues are genuinely strong in chill-out, ambient, deep house and classical styles, but mainstream chart pop isn't available this way. We'll tell you plainly which fits your venue.

How do you help with licence reconciliation?

Every track played is logged per zone with timestamps. When PPL PRS asks what you played, the answer is a report, not a guess.

Reliability & hardware

Does the system need a constant internet connection?

No, and this is the heart of the design. Music plays from local storage; the connection is used for overnight content updates and reporting. If your broadband dies on Saturday afternoon, the music carries on and nobody knows.

What hardware do I need?

A standard Windows or Linux machine. We supply solid-state, no-moving-parts PCs if you'd like hardware included (from £149 for a set-top box, £299 for a single-zone PC). Built-in sound cards are fine for one zone; multi-zone systems use professional interfaces.

How many zones can one system run?

Up to 32 audio outputs per machine, and machines cluster; our largest single-venue installations run more than 60 independent zones. There are no per-zone software fees.

Will it work with our existing amplifiers and speakers?

Almost certainly. We output standard line-level analogue, AES3 and Dante audio-over-IP, feeding QSC, Symetrix, BSS, Crown, Bose and most other commercial audio systems without replacement.

The music & programming

How is this different from a big playlist on shuffle?

Random selection repeats artists, lurches between moods and plays the same songs at the same times. Our system distributes artists, tempos, decades and genres deliberately, remembers what played yesterday, and follows a programme designed by curators from UK radio.

Can music change through the day automatically?

Yes, that's standard. Calm mornings, energetic Saturday afternoons, wind-down at close: schedules follow your trading day, per zone, without staff involvement.

What about Christmas music?

By default it builds gradually from 1 December and stops after Boxing Day. If you want it different (more, less, none at all, earlier) then it's your station and we set it however you like.

Can current chart hits play more often than older songs?

Yes, priority weighting (a 1-19 scale) lets current hits lead the rotation while the back catalogue provides depth.

Service & getting started

Is there a free trial?

Yes, there's a no-obligation 28-day trial, including couriered hardware where needed. Most venues know within a week.

What does it cost?

From £45.99 per zone per month on a 24-month term. Hardware can be bought outright or rented. Multi-site estates and cruise fleets are priced individually. Request a quote.

Who do we deal with for support?

The UK team that builds the platform, based in Falmouth, Cornwall. We've shipped a bug fix within 60 minutes of the report; that's the standard we hold ourselves to.

Can you build custom features for our business?

Yes. We develop the entire platform in-house, and custom integrations such as announcements, signage, reporting feeds and unusual scheduling are a conversation, not a change request into the void.
